Memorisely

How I've taught and mentored 70 design students and the lessons I've learned along the way.

2024

UX Research, UI Design, Design Systems

I discovered Memorisely while seeking an avenue to give back to the design community that had given so much to me. After a year of investing deeply into their worldwise community, I was recruited to teach their UX/UI bootcamp.

My Role

UX/UI, UI Bootcamp Instructor

My Work

  • Remote teaching (Zoom, Figma, Figjam)

  • Case study facilitation

  • Mentoring and career development sessions

How might we share our design knowledge with those new to design?

Teaching the Bootcamp students has forced me to slow down and distill the takeaways from my experiences into digestible terms that even non-designers can understand. I’m also able to strengthen my grasp of UX/UI best practices by regularly reviewing and teaching them. And I’m also able to exercise the all-important “I don’t know, but I’ll find out” muscle.

How might we demonstrate that design is about more than just pixel-pushing?

Teaching at Memorisely isn’t just about research surveys and Figma prowess - it’s about demonstrating the importance of positive energy, genuine curiosity, and hands-on collaboration in the design world. As we teach classes, provide feedback, and communicate with our students, we’re setting the example for the designers we hope they become.

Takeaways

Knowledge is meant to be shared in meaningful ways. Sometimes, as designers, we are so busy learning that we forget to share what we've learned. Or we share things on social media or LinkedIn, but have no real way of knowing their impact and if those lessons were grasped. Finding an intentional way to equip others, whether through teaching a class, mentoring, panel discussions, or coffee chats is essential to mold you into a holistic designer and to contribute to the wellbeing of the design community.
