Step 1: Usability Audit

Iliad came to me with 3 goals for their product:

  • Increase User Retention

  • Provide Quality Data to Users

  • Introduce Monetization

I conducted a Usability Audit of their current designs to identify opportunities to pursue these goals.

Step 2: Initial Explorations

I brought these opportunities to Iliad, and we aligned on a few large endeavors for me to take on. First up - redesigning their Library page.

  • Mapped out page content using priority guides

  • Improved their card component’s usability (G1: User Retention)

  • Introduced statistics (G2: Quality Data; G3: Monetization)

Step 3: Profile Overhaul

Our updates to the Library page cascaded to affect the Profile page, so that was the next task.

  • Conducted competitive analysis of app profile screens

  • Card sorted to determine the app's ideal information architecture

  • Conceptualized and illustrated various book reading status displays

Step 4: Coming Home

Card sorting the IA during the Profile overhaul revealed a major gap in the app's structure - it needed a home page.

  • Conducted competitive analysis of direct and indirect competitor products

  • Iterated on various designs to merge the personal and social features of the app

Takeaways

These efforts were time-boxed, with a focus on delivering quality, well-documented solutions every week. To that end, I believe I was very successful, and I’m very proud of the work I did for Iliad. Now, the next step in these explorations is to test the designs, gather data, and provide evidence that these have met Iliad’s goals. That’s still to come, as my partnership with Iliad is far from over - so stay tuned for more!
